I have no doubt that you have heard this statement before. Have you ever considered what it means? I say, we use it to express a truth that beginnings lead to progress and development. Yes? So, if it has such promising potential, why do we make starting sound so uneventful? Sometimes I think our starts don’t get the glory they deserve because we focus so much attention on the finish and the results. You’ve all heard the statement, “It is not how your start that matters but how you finish.” I would just like to advocate on the behalf of START for a moment.
START is to our mental storehouse as Disney World is to a child. Disney Park’s motto is “the place where dreams come true”. Hey there FINISH, you wouldn’t exist without START. You can never divorce because you rely on each other. You’re a team; islands in the stream.
Okay, enough of that. START is important!
How often do we go around and around in our thoughts about a thing before we ever make a decision? Then how much longer after we decide does it take us to move on our decision? Starting requires focus. With all the distractions in the world today, focus is a hot commodity. So how do we START and get off the decision bench? You need a focal point.
Focal points tend to be visual but purposeful messaging can do the trick too. When your thoughts get to running away, the mental conversation you need to replace in your mental storehouse is of your focal point. We have a few around my house. My husband’s latest message is, “We are not going backwards.” I love this one because it is a reminder that we have progressed and we must keep up the momentum.
Are you having trouble getting started? Can I help you change that round robin conversation in your head that is getting you nowhere? Pick a message focal point and declare it, every day. I found a few suggestions for you from our great friend Google.
How about these to get you on your way:
- “Start Where You Are. Use What You Have. Do What You Can.” – Unknown
- “Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Unknown
- “The most important step is always the first one.” – Unknown
- “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” – Mark Twain
- “Go Get It!” Mary Mary
- “Starting now, I’m taking life to a whole new level.” – Jerry Flanagan
There are several more. Feel free to create your own. Speak it over yourself. Start your day with it. Declare it to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Write it on your mirror or place it on a notecard on your desk in the office. You have the power to START. You got your start somewhere. You did. Wherever you are now, let this be a reminder that your development and your achievements manifested because of your beginning. So listen, the menu is in front of you. Click on the button that spells, S – T – A – R – T. Enter into the place where dreams come true.
